Why Can't Rovo / Agents Count?

Hi Folks

We're trying to use Rovo / Agent to help us produce a Report of all Epics in a Project % complete, but keep getting incorrect results

On Epics in Jira we are all used to see this Child Work Items Bar and % Done.

We therefore thought it would be quite easy, but it seems not!  Has anyone got this working?

We've tried things like:

For all Epics in this project, create a table showing:

  • Epic Name
  • Total Child Work Items
  • Child Work Items Done
  • Child Work Items Not Done
  • Percentage Complete

Calculate Percentage Complete as:
Done Child Work Items ÷ Total Child Work Items × 100

But when we compare Jira Epics to the Agent Output there are always differences

Hello @Jamie Scott

I’d be cautious about using a Rovo Agent for deterministic calculations like Epic progress. It can easily diverge from the Jira UI due to API data limits, permission differences, or calculation mismatches like issue counts versus story points.

It's much safer to think of Rovo as a separate narrative layer. You can handle the calculations upstream using Atlassian Analytics, the REST API, or Jira Automation to sync the percentage to a custom field.

The problem isn't really with the Rovo itself, but more with how often the models are changing and how the integration Rovo in Atlassian products is still a work in progress.

Best,

That's a really good point. Thanks.
