It would be great to get support to authenticate to Atlassian MCP from GitHub Copilot CLI, as it would not only enable users of the CLI, but also VSCode users to use the background agents feature, as it offload the work to the CLI.

At the moment, GitHub Copilot CLI doesn’t support authenticating to Atlassian MCP, so you can’t use Rovo tools or background agents through the CLI. MCP requires its own OAuth 2.1 flow, which Copilot CLI doesn’t implement yet. Atlassian has acknowledged interest in broader MCP client support, but there’s no published timeline. For now, only clients that implement the MCP auth flow—VS Code extensions, ChatGPT connectors, MCP SDKs—can connect.
