The Immortal Join Loom Popup

Every time we launch the page, Loom cheerfully informs us:

Join your team on Loom
<user> and <n> others are using Loom...

Yes, Loom. We know.

We know our coworkers are using Loom.
We knew yesterday.
We knew this morning.
We knew the previous 47 times we closed the popup.

At this point, Loom is less an onboarding prompt and more the digital equivalent of a coworker standing in the doorway saying:

“Hey, a bunch of us are over here. You sure you don’t want to come? No? Its ok I'll be right back...”

Every. Single. Time.

There is also a small irony here:

This popup is supposed to encourage people to join Loom. If the invitation itself is becoming one of the things users complain about most, it may be having the opposite effect.  I'm not sure your popup is building enthusiasm for joining a product with an immortal invitation.

The larger problem is that this appears to be default behavior, and in a corporate environment that gets annoying very quickly. We have already received multiple complaints from users about this popup continually returning after they dismiss it.

These aren't users trying to configure Loom, explore Loom, or asking to be reminded about Loom. They're simply trying to get to their work. When a user explicitly closes the same onboarding prompt over and over, repeatedly presenting it stops being helpful onboarding and starts becoming UI noise.

From an IT/admin perspective, this is also an unfortunate default. This really should have one of the following behaviors:

  • Persist the user's dismissal.
  • Provide a “Don't show this again” option.
  • At an absolute minimum, introduce a sane cooldown rather than displaying it indefinitely.

A user closing the same prompt dozens of times is probably a sufficiently strong signal that they have, in fact, received the message.

Sometimes the X really does mean X.

Hey @Luke Bair ,

We're using Loom (although not in a traditional way) but I haven't seen this particular popup really 👀 Maybe once though...

My question is - when you say "...this appears to be a default behavior..." what URL are users actually accessing that this thing pops up every single time?

Disregarding all of that (and I completely agree with you that it's a bad UX based on what you described), I know there's this suggestion related to reducing number of promotional notifications: LOOM-478: Make Loom promotional/AI popups (e.g., Loom Personality) permanently dismissible so they don’t keep reappearing on login
*it's not much but well, it's something

Btw, have you tried reaching out to official support to see what they have to say about this? 🤔

Cheers,
Tobi

Good to virtually meet you Tobi.

Its mostly noticeable when we open confluence:  //<tenant>.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/<primary site>/overview

Since this is our landing page its the primary entry point for our department and easily reproducible. I totally agree with the notion of less promotional notifications for business customers, I think LOOM-478's particular issue is probably latterly related.

I have not opened a ticket for this, I wasn't sure it was they could fix, but maybe I should.
Cheers!

Hi @Luke Bair ! Thanks so much for sharing this feedback. I'm a product manager on Loom and want to look into this. Do you mind sharing a screenshot of the popup you are seeing?

Thanks!

Teresa

Great to meet you Teresa.  So I don't want to jinx it but its not showed up since late last week. I was beginning to think maybe someone made a change, but I checked with our Atlassian admin and we haven't made any changes on our end.

The popup that has been present every day since we onboarded Loom for a subset of users is currently gone.

I think for now we close it out?  Thoughts?

Sounds good, Luke! Glad to hear the popup hasn’t shown up again. Let’s close this out for now. If it comes back, please let me know. I’d be happy to dig in with our engineering team. Thanks again for sharing your feedback!
