Will JSD 3.15+ work *as add-on* atop JIRA Data Center?

Hello. We may have outgrown our single-server, multi product solution, may move to Data Center multi-node. Whether that is on dedicated hardware or virtual machines is to be determined, but separate from that we need to know whether service desk will run correctly as an add-on to JIRA Software. That is how we use it now, with many thousands of service desk customers. My concern is about how it handles allocation both in the database and on the split home directories of data specific to service desk.

It will run in a DC install the same as it does on Server.

The allocation in the database and home directories is not handled by service desk, it's done by the Jira Core application it is installed on, and that won't change just because you've added an application.
