Using Schema as an Asset Object

So, looking at the Asset Object custom field type, I think it would be very useful in some contexts to be able to be able to leverage the schema objects themselves in the field. For example, assuming the following schema

Hardware:

  - phones:

      - Phone1

      - Phone2

In change management, I may want to indicate that all phones are impacted in a change... so ideally, I would select the "phones" schema object. Is there a way to do this today?
