Setting permissions when AD is read only

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
Bashing my head on the wall here. I have Jira SD integrated to AD, although it's read only. I'm trying to enable the "infrastructure" AD group to administer a project. However, no luck.
Settings don't seem to save either. Despite adding myself as the project lead, it still shows the local user:
But I'm the lead on the project main page?
Any idea how I can make this work? We can't add users to groups in Jira because AD is read only and we can't use local AD accounts to administer projects either by the looks of it
