Within Jira, after I have assigned a person to a task, can I assign a pre-determined role?  For example:

Joe is assigned to work a task as a developer. I want to assign Tim as a tester of that work. Is there a way to have a "developer" and "tester" of the same work product when I assign two separate resources?

Matthew, welcome to the Community.

Each task can only have one Assignee at a time. You have a couple of options to consider:

• Use sub-tasks - you could use the main task for developing and a sub-task for testing or you could use a sub-task for each. you assign the sub-task to the appropriate person
• Pass the baton - you could create a workflow with statuses that represents your process. Example:
  • Open - unassigned, backlog, awaiting development
  • Developing - assigned to the developer
  • Testing - assigned to the tester once the developer is done
  • Done - verified

In the later option you could predefine the tester by using a custom field that is then automatically copied into the Assignee when the transition from Developing to Testing is performed. 

Personally, I prefer the first option.
