On update of a custom text field, append contents to another text field

I would like to append the data from a one line custom text field to a larger text field to create a running log of activity. 

I have not seen any add on that does this.  Any ideas?

Use Case - Agent performs an action and records that action is a custom one-line text field called "QuickNote"  (ie "applied patches, waiting to see if issue occurs again")   Upon completion of the update to the field, the systems appends the text from "QuickNote" to "Running Log" ( custom mutli-line text field) with timestamp and agent.

Hi Chuck,

from my understanding this more or less describes the idea of 'comments'. Could you maybe be a bit more elaborate on the idea and why comments are not used?

It might be that Community members haven't understood the motivation behind the use case you described why it is probably a bit empty here.
