Jira does not send notifications on work items when user is in active session

When someone makes a status update on a ticket and I have the Jira tab opened in my browser, I do not receive notifications (via email nor through the Jira browser app).

I understand that email notifications may only function while you are not logged in, but I need to see the notifications in Jira browser app at least. I don't see them there, though.

I am "watching" all the work items for which I don't receive the notifications. I created them myself so I should be receiving the updates.

Are there any settings to change so I can keep up with updates to the tickets?

Hi @Joanna Ignatowicz

Welcome to the community! You've hit on a common frustration with Jira's native notifications.

Notification Assistant for Jira solves this exact problem.

It lets you: Configure notification delivery rules that work regardless of user session state, set up scheduled digest emails so users don't miss updates during active work, use custom templates to ensure critical work item notifications always go through.

We've deployed this for enterprise teams who needed reliable notification delivery even when users are actively logged in.

Happy to share setup details if you'd like to explore this option.

Cheers!

Hello @Joanna Ignatowicz

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

The sending of notifications doesn't require you to be either logged in or logged out of Jira. They are sent regardless of your current session activity.

The notifications that are sent depend on the notifications configured for the Space. That configuration determines to whom notifications are sent and for which events. Each Space can have a different configuration for its notifications.

The receipt of notifications can also be affected by your personal Notifications Settings, available from the gear icon near your avatar. It is possible for you to disable receipt of notifications. Double check that you have all notifications of interested enabled through your personal Notifications Settings.

If your personal Notifications Settings are not limiting the notifications you receive, and if the notifications configuration for the Space is set to send notifications for the events to users associated with the work item, and if you are associated to the work item in a matching manner, then you should be receiving email notifications in a timely manner.

Regarding the in-app notifications I am not sure if that is updated without a screen refresh. I've not yet been able to execute a scenario where I intentionally generated an in-app notification in my test environment. I found this documentation on that feature:
