Jira Forms

Leah Bell January 10, 2025

Hi All,

Im wondering if there is a way to completely copy the information from a submitted form into the description field in Jira?

We use a lot of forms but we also clone some to different projects we have to manually enter the data into the clone ticket as the form doesn't pull across with it.

Hi @Leah Bell , I believe you should be able to do this using automation and smart values for forms. You can read more about this here - access-smart-values-for-forms-and-form-fields

Thank you so much, Jack. I have been waiting months to do this. It just shows I wasn't searching for the right things to get this guide!

Hello @Leah Bell

Yes, it’s possible to copy the information from a submitted form into the description field in Jira, but it might require some automation or customization.

You can create an automation rule that triggers when a form is submitted. Use the Edit Issue action in the automation to map the fields from the form into the description field. This way, when the form is submitted, its data is automatically stored in the description, ensuring it gets copied over when the issue is cloned. If your form has complex fields or attachments, you may need to use custom scripting or apps like ScriptRunner to include all the data.

Hi @Leah Bell

With Smart Forms for Jira, you can copy all the form fields responses into the Jira Description field. This ensures the information stays accessible, even when cloning issues between projects.

Steps to Configure:

  1. Access Smart Forms for Jira:

    • Open the existing form or create a new one.
  2. Open the Form Setting:

    • Set up Create new issue.
  3. Map Form Fields to Description:

    • In the Create new issue setting, choose the description Jira issue field.
    • Map all the necessary form fields to the Description field. This will consolidate all form responses into a single text block in the Jira Description.Screen Recording 2025-01-13 at 11.06.29.gif
  4. Save and Use the Form:

    • Save your form settings and use the form as usual (attach to issues, share via a portal, or use a public link).
