JIRA installation application server requirement

Pramod Tripathi July 15, 2019

Hi Team,

We are installing JIRA service desk but we do not want to install on Apache tomcat. May I know what are the other application server supported by the JIRA?

We don't want to install any open source product due to security vulnerability issues.

Hi @Pramod Tripathi ,

Atlassian does not provide any other way to use Jira Service Desk, it's always bundled with Apache Tomcat.

You could also look into their Cloud offering : https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/product/jira-servicedesk.ondemand

Thanks for your reply. Do we require to install Apache Tomcat server before installing JIRA or JIRA installer will install server it self . Also i want to know in term of security, Tomcat is open source so how JIRA handle the vulnerability . if got any vulnerability in the server or related jars then JIRA will provide patch for that.

Hi @Pramod Tripathi ,

Tomcat is already bundled with Jira, you don't have anything to install manually.

For security issues, Atlassian is publishing any vulnerability on their website and then issues a security fix.

@Alexis Robert Thanks a lot for your reply. Is there any support subscription which we can purchase and that can provide us support for vulnerabilities, bugs fixes and assistance debugging production issues .

Hi @Pramod Tripathi ,

the maintenance you renew each year for your Atlassian products provides you with these fixes : they will send emails to your contact address when there is a fix coming out, and you can contact the support when you have an issue directly here.

@Alexis Robert  thanks for your reply. As you said JIRA service desk is come with Apache server. Is it possible to install it on any other application server ? like IBM WebSphereIf not there is there any JIRA product which can install on any other  server ? Actually our security team have concern about Tomcat. They said it is opensource so can we use any other application server.

Hi @Pramod Tripathi ,

unfortunately as I said, only Apache Tomcat is supported for Jira applications. Atlassian does not provide WAR/EAR files anymore.

However, Atlassian provides security fixes if there is a vulnerability in Tomcat for example.
