Hi @Kevin Roe 👋🏻,
Just wanted to share that the requirement you mentioned is definitely achievable in Jira.
You can navigate to Project Settings > Work Item > Fields and set the built-in Work Log custom field as required. After that, you can add a transition screen to your workflow so that the screen pops up during status changes. Since the Work Log field will be required on that screen, users won’t be able to complete the transition without entering the time spent.
🌱 If you're looking for more flexibility or detailed work logging features, and you're open to third-party apps, I'd recommend taking a look at WorklogPRO - Timesheets for Jira.
It allows you to do everything mentioned above using its own custom field Log Work (WP), but also offers additional options like attribute, account and more. For example, you can define a select-list for attribute and use it to add more detailed information to your worklogs.
🍀 To learn more, feel free to contact me or explore the application through the Atlassian Marketplace link I’ve provided. 🍀

Hi @Kevin Roe,
If you're looking for ways to make time logging more consistent across the team, I recently wrote a short article with practical, real-world tips on building a strong time-tracking culture — it might be useful for your case:

Hi @Kevin Roe
Yes, you can add the log time field the field used on the transition to resolved.
You can set a validator on the same transition to make the field required

Hi @Kevin Roe
This should be possible via your workflow. Create a screen if you don't already have one for resolutions, in the screen add the fields you need, then In the transition to your resolved status add a "Show a screen" and select your resolution screen. Then you can also add a validation "validate a field" to ensure the field isn't empty, this way the agent s can't resolve without filling it out
We don't use log time but below is a similar setup requiring our agents to fill out the resolution details

Hi Kevin,
I hope this post finds you well!
Yes, this is possible. If you have a screen tied to a workflow transition for completed work through a validator, you can add the Log Time field to that screen. Then within your Field Configuration you will want to mark the Log Time field as required.
In doing this it will pop up a screen during that transition and the Log Time field will be required for the user to be able to transition the item to the completed status. I have added some screenshots below to illustrate:

Thanks Andy this worked perfect! Is there a way to have it open/expand the Log Work fields automatically and only display Time Spent? "Date started" isn't needed but can stay if it's auto populated. Mine opens like this now.

Hi Kev,
Glad to hear this worked well!
Currently there is not a way expand this field automatically. We do have JRACLOUD-85488 which requests that on transition screens this automatically expands. We also have a more generic JRACLOUD-96122 which notes it should auto expand on all screens. I would encourage you to watch and vote for one or both of those Feature Requests to let our team know you are interested in this functionality and get updates on them as they are reviewed.
Best,
Andy
