Is it possible to automatically assign tickets to IT Resource/Assignee based on their issue type or components?

That is exactly what Components are for!
Components can have a Component Lead and a Default assignee. In the Default assignee you can select the Component Lead, Project Lead, Project Default, Unassigned. So this is the way to do it.

Appreciate your prompt response.
It's only working when manually creating an issue then setting a component from there. But if it was set from an existing ticket, the assignee won't automatically update even after refreshing the page. See screenshots below:

Ah yes indeed, in this case it won't work.
What you could do is create an automation on Trigger field changes (Component) for actions "Edit issue, Transition issue" and make a triage there to set the assignee:
