Attempting to install the latest release of Service Desk, 4.0.2. Article " Does Jira Service Desk need Jira Core or Jira Software" says that this release is now a standalone product. Other articles say this is not true.
I have Jira Software 8.0.2 and Confluence 6.14.1 installed on the server, both running as they should. Here is what happens when attempting to install Service Desk 4.0.2:
When I attempt to install Service Desk I first tried installing in the jira location <path>/atlassian/jira. Nope! Installer wants a different location.
Entered <path>/atlassian/servicedesk, installer accepts that.
Database location same issue, used servicedesk instead.
Finally, I get to ports Jira Service Desk will use. The installer presents HTTP: 8080, Control: 8095. Selected Recommend and the installer reports back they are in use. Of course, with Jira.
So I have three questions.
A) Is Service Desk 4.0.2 actually meant to run independent of jira? -OR- With Jira Software 8.0.2 installed and running, does one still need to resort to using the plugin?
B) If so can someone provide me a link to the correct install instructions for ServiceDesk 4.0.2? So far all I find are instructions on installing ServiceDesk as a component of Jira or instructions reference back to Jira, nothing ServiceDesk.
C) Can someone provide me with the Atlassian recommended HTTP and Control ports for ServiceDesk since the installer is says you cannot use Jira ports?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance...
Jack
Hi,
installation is much more simple if you already have Jira. You just need to go to /plugins/servlet/applications/versions-licenses in your Jira and on the right side click on "Try it for free". Then just paste you license.
Hi Petr,
Thank You for your response. I do know about the plugin which I know I can do.
The question I posted really comes out of a published Atlassian document from March of 2018 that states "As of Jira Server 7.x and up, Jira Service Desk is now a standalone product with our Jira family able to be purchased, licensed, and installed on its own." Given the way it is worded, it makes it sound as if you can install it along side installed copied of Confluence and Jira. And since I am putting together completely new server I thought I see if the statement was really true or not.
Given my experience with help desk applications like Kayako and Zendesk, having Jira and ServiceDesk independent of one another on the same server would provide some added flexibility over the two applications mentioned above.
Hopefully an Atlassian staff member can comment as well.
Again Thank You!
Jack

Ok, so I understand you now.
You have both options regarding your first question.
Question 2 and 3
You can install it in same way like Jira Core or Software, but if you want run two apps independently, then you must change ports during installation to another ones (for example 8180 and 8195 - if those are not used).
But if it's not crucial for you then I can recommend you install it as one application by plugin, because in other way you will loose options for connecting projects between service desk projects and developers (for example customer will report bug and you can link issue in developer project where they can resolve it).
If you will need you can ask for something another and I hope this my second answer will be more valuable for you.
