Index Recover

Hello team 

I saw in documentation thar before  performing the indexing.
i need to do actions bellow :

a. Index recovery snapshot.
b. Database backup

I do not understand why ? and what is index recover ?

Will you kindly post a link to the documentation to which you refer? We re-index all the time, following certain actions for which Jira recommends we do so (e.g. adding a custom field), and we don't do either of those tasks beforehand.
