We are looking into which Service desk software to use and need SSO for our 500 employees to a knowledge base etc. Can Identity manager handle that for the Customers in Jira Service desk or will https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/ID-79 do for example?
If Identity manager can handle Customers for Jira Service desk will those users cost anything? 3$ a month for 500 users does seem very expensive.

Currently, it's not possible to use SSO for customers authentication.
We have a feature request suggesting the implementation of this ability:

Please, click on vote and watch to receive updates about the feature.
For now, if you need your customers to use SSO, you must convert them to Atlassian account and remove their application access.
If they are users but without the jira-servicedesk-users group, for example, they won't count as a license, so you won't have to pay for their accounts.
