I created a new field "Priority Rank" that I want to show on the main issue screen.
When configuring the Screens, the field is listed on the Default tab (the only tab). But when I go look at an issue the field is not there.
I've gone in multiple circles making sure that I am hitting the proper screen (Configure Issue Type Screen Scheme, View Issue and Edit Issue), but I can't make it 'take'.
I've also removed some fields that we don't use from screens, like component and label, but they persist when I view and edit issues.
So I might be completely missing where I need to edit that screen?
Custom Fields do not show up unless they have a value in them. If you would like it to show on the default screen make sure the custom field has a default value when the issue is created or require that it has a field for an issue to be created.
Awesome, let me test that. Thanks!
So, a semi-related follow up question.. We don't use the "Component" or "Label" fields, is it possible to nuke them from the View screen? This isn't a big deal, but if it's easy, it would clean up the interface a bit.

If I remember correctly even removing those fields is done in one of two ways:
Using the field configuration (easiest way to hide for everything, just copy the current field configuration make changes and apply to scheme, then apply scheme to project) - https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver073/specifying-field-behavior-861253403.html
If you want to hide these only on certain issue operations, use fields/screens/screen scheme/issue type screen scheme.
