How to make Jira attachments open at 100% instead of size-to-window?

Dan Figueroa August 11, 2023

When viewing an attachment in a Jira ticket, the doc opens at a "size-to-window" instead of 100% view size.  The result is that if you are using Jira with a browser that is 3/4 of your screen or full screen, when you view the Jira attachment it displays the doc at a zoomed-in view of 150%-200%+ depending on your screen size and/or the size of your open browser window.

A 187% view zoom is very annoying because the user has to immediately hit the minus button at the bottom of the window to shrink the doc to 100% or somewhere around normal size for comfortable reading.

MS Word has a toggle under "view" to zoom with size of window.

view tab zoom Word.PNG

Jira attachments seem to open/view at "size-to-window" by default.

Is there a way to turn-off the "size-to-window" view in Jira?

We would like 100% view by default.  This auto-stretch wastes time & productivity.

If there is a simple fix, please tell me because our IT guys don't know how to do it and this feature as implemented makes me hate Jira, because I have to look at Jira attachments all day every day.

help.

I faced a similar issue before and found a workaround that might help you. You can try downloading the attachment and then opening it in your preferred software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat for PDFs, Microsoft Word for documents). This way, you can control the zoom level and view it at 100% comfortably. While it's not a direct solution within Jira, it can save you from constantly adjusting the zoom level. Hope this helps!

Thanks.  That's what I am forced to do currently.  That solution, unfortunately, does not make reviewing attachments in Jira convenient.  I was hoping someone knew the simple trick on how to un-toggle the zoom-to-screen-size setting that appears to be the default.  Seems so unlikely that that particular view setting is fixed.  If it is fixed, team Jira should consider un-fixing / fixing it.

@Dan Figueroa welcome to the Atlassian community

Can you provide some additional information.  What type of attachments are doing this?

I also encountered this issue. That open default by application 200% that crazy application I ever meet. So jira application needs to be reconfigured 100% to meet user requirements.
Thanks!

I’m having to deal with this problem as well. What my team does is instead of downloading it you can just reset the size with 1 button click and it goes back to 100%. Not ideal but maybe 2 clicks less than downloading it and opening it in word/pdf reader.

That's what we do as well, but the minus (100%) button is on bottom left/center of the screen and after selecting an attachment the user's mouse/curser button is at the top RT of the screen.  If you used Jira every once in a while...not a biggie, but when you must use Jira everyday, it's incredibly annoying.  When you have large monitors, that distance is significant.  It's such a simple, thing, I figured it must be an option in some menu, somewhere in Jira that our IT people are too busy to find.  That's why I made the post.

If it is not an option, I'm surprised that no one at Jira/Atlassian uses their own product enough to see how bad this little UI oversight is and how it negatively impacts the UX and the brand.

Totally understand. I was surprised when I found there are no options for changing this currently, at least from what I know. Ours doesn't seem quite as annoying as yours since the curser tends to be mid screen and the minus icon is mid bottom.
