I want to transition an issue from "Backlog" to "Assigned" when the "Assigned" field is created or updated in the "Backlog" column. I'm very new to Jira and Kanban, so pointing to good documentation or training would be acceptable and appreciated!

Hi @Alan L Gredell and welcome to the community!

Kanban indeed is a term not associated usually with service management. Most likely you meant statuses. You can create a new automation rule using Jira Automation like the following one (of course you may want to replace the "In Progress" status with your status "assigned".

Let me know if you need any further clarifications.

@Alan L Gredell -

Welcome to the community.  In JSM, there is no concept of Kanban and everything is tracked via Queues.  Kanban and Scrum boards are related to Jira Software projects.  So you may want to join the Jira Software product community also for your future reference.

At a high level, you can achieve what you are asking for via Automation for Jira add-on where you can define an rule to auto promote issues when assignee field is populated after the issue is created.

If assignee field is populated at the issue creation time, then you can also customize the project's WF via post-function call to auto promote your issues to the the "Assigned" WF status.

This type of automation is not available out of the box as far as I know.

Hope this helps.
