our agents should be able to change the ticket status directly on the ticket page. How to achieve this?

By default, agents should be able to change status of tickets, but it's possible to edit this permission and restrict some status.

First, please, confirm if there are no validators on the statuses on the workflow restricting the transition to be changed to specific groups. Project settings > Workflows > .
Use the Diagram view and click on each transition to confirm that.
After that, check the permissions on the project (Project settings > Permissions) to confirm that the role "Service Desk Team" can transition issues.
