How to add a Parent / Child Field in the work item view?

Jericho Sison

Hi!

Planning to add a parent / child field in the work item view of all incidents / CRs/ SRs to link tickets. However. when I go to the setting and try to enable the Parent field, it says locked. I tried to create a new field but there seems to be a no field type that is available for this use.

Any suggestions?

Hi @Jericho Sison ,
Even though Parent field is a locked field, you can add it to the incident/CRs/SRs work item view.
Please check if the Parent field is added in the Field Configuration scheme of your service space.

Hello @Jericho Sison

What type of Space does this concern? Click the ellipses button next to the Space name in the navigation panel on the left. What do the last two lines in the pop up say?

Can you provide a screen image of where you are going to enable the field?

The native Parent field is used only for recording the Parent of the work item being viewed. And the available parents are based on the Work Item Hierarchy. The native hierarchy for the Jira and for the Standard plan is limited to

Level 1: Epics
|-- Level 0: standard item types; i.e. Story, Bug, Task
|-- Level -1:subtask item types

Hi @Trudy Claspill  this is for company-managed service space.

I want to add the parent field in this section but it's not in the list of available fields in the space setting.

You should be able to add the field to the work item Layout by clicking the Configure option below the lowest of those panels on the right side of the work item details view.

However that option will be available only if you have the Administer Projects permission for that project. If you don't see the option you will need to contact a user that does have that permission for that project, or a Jira Administrator.

Hi, thanks for the advise.

I was able to add the Parent field now but it doesn't show any tickets that I can relate it with. Does it have something to do with the hierarchy of the items?

Also we don't have "Done" in our workflow so there's no done items.

Hello @Jericho Sison

Are you and administrator for the Jira app? Are you an administrator for the Space?

Possible reasons for no parent items showing:

  1. The item type you are viewing is at the top of the Work item Hierarchy so there is no item type that is a higher level that could be its parent.
  2. You don't have permission to see any of the items that are at the next higher level that could be made a parent of the current item.
  3. There are no items in your instance of the type at the next higher level.

If you are a Jira App Admin you can review this work type hierarchy to find out if #1 is the case.

Note that the parent of a given item can be set only to an item of the type at the level adjacent/directly one level up. Item types at Level 0 can have as parents only item types from Level 1, for example.

If you need to skip levels or choose a parent from the same level you cannot use the Parent field. Instead you must use Work Item Linking. This is a generic way to show a relationship between issues, such as blocks/is-blocked-by. Jira does not interpret those types of links as "parent/child".
