How do you create column view versus list view for checkbox data?

We created a custom checkbox field in our New Employee form but it shows the checkboxes one under another rather than side-by-side. Anyone know how to change that appearance?

I'm afraid the layout of the fields simply doesn't support it.  You'd need to hack the core code (or use some horrible javascript that wouldn't work half the time)
