Had an existing project, then someone did an import from an older jira account

Lost nearly 40 stories and at least as many subtasks in my project and all imported projects were unrelated to the new account project. The project title still displays in the newer jira account but no issues are associated. When clicking on the project title, a page messages that "This project isn't available - it may have been deleted or your permissions may have changed". And there is a button to view all projects - it links to a list of projects with my ghost project title still displayed.

How do I recover my stories and subtasks? If I can't why isn't a clear communication about this blowing up everything that currently exists on an import? And how does one delete a project - the project is still sitting in the project list(s) with just a title?!?
