Groups are not visible if I add groups to a security level

I want to add a group to a security level, but don't see al the groups. Is there a maximum on the number of visible groups?

Yes, there is a maximum of groups visualization. However if you know the group you can start typing and Jira will bring it up.

Please note that capitalization of group names may not show up as expected and you need to be specific on your search
