Failure to create project

Our organization uses JIRA software and I am evaluting use of Jira Service Desk for our group. I installed an evaluation license for JIRA Service Desk Server on my local machine. 

I was at the point of creating the first JIRA project, however I get a very vague error: an error occured while trying to contact JIRA

In order to have more details about what could be causing the error you are facing, we need you to provide us with the error returned in your atlassian-jira.log in your installation directory when trying to create the project.

Without further details about the error, I can only recommend restarting your Jira application and check if the error still happening.
