Error when creating a filter

I am trying to create a filter that shows all the current tickets open for my project for "assigned users" 

but get this error 'The Jira server was contacted but has returned an error response. We are unsure of the result of this operation.' But when I try to change the default field "Assignee:all" I get the above error. 

Any ideas? I am just a temp at this company but it would be nice to know what the issue is?

Could you post the filter?

Is it something like this:

project = "my project" and assignee is not empty
