We used "Issue Templates for Jira Cloud" to build a template for the creation of an epic in a service project. The template then creates multiple child issues and service requests. These requests are directed to other projects, which then need to have the request type updated via automation. Is there a way to update the request type once the issue is created in the destination project?
Based on your ask, you are using Epic issue type for a JSM project?
By default, Epic issue type is only for Jira Software Application project under normal usage and not for JSM project.
However, you can configure another automation rule in those designation projects (i.e. trigger off on issue created event) to update issue's request type.
If you can further explain your ask by providing more information, then we will be better to assess your ask better to assist further.

Thank you for the reply. Correct, the epic is being created in a Software Project, the templates are stored in a software project also. The child issues are distributed to other projects, one of which is a JSM project. Once the service request is created in the JSM, I'd like to utilize automation to update the request type.
The automation would start when the issue is created in the JSM, if there is an epic with the word 'offboarding' in the summary, then change the request type of the service request to 'Offboarding'
