Custom logo does not show in IE 8, but it works in Chrome

In the look and feel section of our Jira instance I have uploaded a new logo. This won't appear in our default browser (IE 8) when accessing the site. It shows a box, the size of the logo with a red cross.

When accessing the site from another browser (chrome) fromt he same pc with the same proxy/firewall settings it does work.

How can we fix this?

This maybe because IE8 is not supported anymore

we have the same issue with IE 11 which is still under support so I think this might be something else.
