I wanted to enable the option for non-Service Desk team members to close their own tickets. I changed the permissions so that autors of a topic could close issues. However, nothing changed and its not possible for them. Am I missing something?

Do you want customers to close their own ticket from portal?
If yes, you should go to workflow as a diagram mode, click the related close transition and make the transition visible in customer portal. Then, there will be a button on portal issue view for customers.
