I am able to import pre-existing barcodes and still use the search feature or will I have to re-tag all my assets with a Jira QR code?

welcome to the community and thanks for your question.
You can not choose custom barcodes for assets, so you will have to regenerate them. Only option to attach those old barcodes would be to attach them to the objects as file attachment.
