Any way to get a notification when a event is close to the due date?

This is a frequently asked question in the Community and, while I provide a quick answer below, I recommend you use the Search bar to look for other answers.

• you can create a filter and setup a subscription for that filter to run daily. something like... due <=3d and resolution is empty. note this will show things overdue too but assume that is desirable. you will need to define the group to notify as the subscription feature cannot dynamically be configured to only alert the assignee for example.
• you can create specific notifications to the Assignee by using an addon, e.g. Automation for Jira

Awesome except.....once I add a subscription there is not option to define "due <=3d"; only options to define how often it sends it out.
