Hi

I am trying to create sprints in Jira, I have read I need to have backlog option available. So I have created Project, in Features tried to activate what was necessary but there is no option to add backlog..

What am I doing wrong? Project is team managed

Hi @iwona_michalewska

Welcome to the community.

There is no backlog feature in JSM. You can only activate Board feature which has been already activated.

Hey @iwona_michalewska welcome

If your project is Jira Service Management (JSM) since you posted to the JSM thread

  • JSM projects (even team-managed) don’t support Backlog or Sprints. These features are only available in Jira Software projects because JSM is designed for service desks (queues, SLAs, request types), not agile planning.
  • That’s why you can’t find the Backlog toggle in your Features screen—it simply doesn’t exist for JSM.

What you can do instead:

  • Enable a Kanban-style board in JSM:
    • Go to Project settings → Features → Board and turn it on.
  • If you need sprints/backlog, you’ll need a Jira Software project (Scrum template) and link it to your JSM project. Many teams do this so support tickets can be escalated to dev sprints.

If your project is Jira Software (team-managed)

  • Backlog and Sprints are available, but you need to enable them:
    • Go to Project settings → Features.
    • Toggle Backlog ON, then Sprints ON (Sprints only appear after Backlog is enabled).
  • You can also add Backlog from the left nav using “+ Add to navigation → Backlog”.

Hope this helps!

Hi Iwona - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

If you are wanting to do Sprints and follow Scrum methodology, then you should create a Jira Software company-managed project. Jira Service Management projects are for things like help desks and ticking systems.
