Associate JSM project with custom object schema

We are using own custom object schema exclusively and not the built in 'Services' schema. Is there any way to sync the project with our custom object schema objects? I'm referencing what is under the Operations section of the project navigation bar. I realize we can reference custom schemas by using custom fields on the issue forms, but we want to directly link the projects to those.

We ran into this as well and just work off custom fields and that has been working fine for us. More control over how we want to use and engage.
