Have you checked out New “Assets” Feature in JSM?

Hey Atlassian Community,

Have you tried the Assets and Configuration Management feature in Jira Service Management? It’s open for trial in Premium and Enterprise plans, and it’s awesome for keeping track of things like computers, software, or office gear. I’ve got a quick guide on who it’s for, what to know before you start, and how it can help your company.

Who’s It For?

The Assets and Configuration Management feature in Jira Service Management is perfect for anyone who needs to keep track of stuff:

  • IT Folks: Great for managing laptops, servers, or software licenses and tying them to tasks like fixing issues or planning updates.
  • HR & Facilities Teams: Awesome for tracking employee gear (like phones) or office items (like desks or projectors).
  • Audit Teams: Ideal for staying on top of costs or passing audits without stress.
  • Anyone with Things to Track: From tech to odd items like pianos, Assets can handle it all!

If you’re dealing with messy lists or struggling to see what’s connected, this tool’s for you!

What to Know Before You Start 🛠

Before jumping in, here’s the lowdown to get started smoothly:

  • What’s IT Asset Management (ITAM)? It’s all about keeping track of your company’s tech stuff (hardware, software,..) throughout its lifecycle. Think of it as knowing what you own, where it is, and how it’s used, so you can save money and avoid headaches.
  • What’s a Configuration Management Database (CMDB)? It’s a database that maps out how your tech and services connect. For example, it shows which servers run which apps, helping you fix problems faster or plan changes without breaking things.
  • Know Your Goal: Are you tackling slow problem-solving, messy tracking, or audit issues? This helps you decide what to track in Assets, which acts as both an ITAM tool and a CMDB.
  • Set Up a System: Assets uses “schemas” (like folders) to organize things. Start with one for something like IT or Facilities and use Atlassian’s templates to make it easy.
  • Add Your Data: Upload info using CSV, JSON, or the Assets Discovery tool (it finds devices on your network). Clean up your data first. The CSV import guide has the steps.
  • Link to Jira: Connect assets to your Jira tickets or tasks to see the full picture. You’ll need to add the Assets field to your ticket views.
  • Trial Tip: You need a Premium or Enterprise plan to test it fully. If you have lots of data, start small to keep things smooth.

The Assets onboarding guide is super helpful for setup!

How It Helps Your Company 🌟

Here’s why Assets is awesome for your team:

  • See Everything Clearly: Spot how things connect to your services, so you can fix issues fast or plan changes without oops moments.
  • Save Time: It updates asset info automatically, so no more endless spreadsheet fixing.
  • Get Smart Info: Check costs, find gaps in rules, or see how your assets are doing. Reports make it easy to share with your team.
  • Works for All: IT, HR, Facilities, everyone can use it, from setting up new hires to managing office stuff.
  • Ready for Audits: Track everything to make audits a breeze and stay on the right side of rules.
  • Grows with You: With tons of add-ons and tools like Assets Discovery, it keeps up as your company gets bigger.

One user said it’s “key for managing software licenses and costs,” which is great for saving money!

If you want even more powerful options, check out asset management plugins on the Atlassian Marketplace. For example, AssetIT by DevSamurai.

Let’s share ideas and make this feature rock!

Happy tracking, everyone! 😄

Hi @Teresa_DevSamurai

Thanks for sharing!

Jira Assets is not really new. It was the Insight App by Riada/Mindville, purchased by Atlassian in 2020. Since then, it was available to JSM Premium and Enterprise customers. I've also heard some rumors it could become available to non-JSM customers too... I hope we'll hear more about it at Team'25 Europe in October!

Cheers,

David
