Custom fields restored from trash when copyback to sandbox from prod

Anyone else had their trashed custom fields restored when doing a copy back from prod ? Since we were doing an initial configuration it made a bit of a mess of the sandbox. Worse than this they aren't just in the list of custom fields - they are back on the screens where they were at the time they were sent to trash.

Advise emptying your trash fields before doing a copy back.
