Could AI Agents Become Real Teammates in Jira?

Jira is already moving toward AI agents that can be assigned work, participate in comments, and execute tasks. That makes me wonder what project management looks like when agents become regular participants in the team.

I’d like to see workflows where:

• Humans and agents can both own tasks
• Agents have access to the right project context
• Multiple agents can work in parallel
• Progress stays visible inside the project
• Humans remain responsible for review and approval

That’s what caught my attention about Sharkly. Its approach is to treat AI agents more like teammates within the project workflow rather than simply adding an AI assistant.

With Jira already moving in this direction, do you think dedicated Jira alternatives still have room to differentiate around human + AI collaboration?

I think we’re already seeing the first version of this inside Jira. Agents can now be assigned to work items, @mentioned in comments, triggered from workflow transitions, and use Jira/Confluence or connected sources as context. Atlassian has also added planning mode so the agent can gather context, propose a plan, and then execute while the work remains visible in Jira.

So the differentiation may become less about “having AI agents” and more about how well the platform manages multi-agent collaboration, permissions, visibility, approvals, and accountability.

For me, keeping humans responsible for review and approval is especially important. That is probably where Jira’s existing workflow and governance model gives it a strong advantage.
