I'm offended that a platform I use for business encourages this type of childish behavior (doing stuff because it would get me another badge, not because it's something I actually need to get my job done).

I think you need to have a think about what this platform is for. It's for a Community of people who have something in common. An aspect of a community is socialisation, and games are a huge part of socialisation. So it's natural, and a good thing that a community platform implements some gamification. If it were optional, I'd say the default should be that you are in, and you can opt-out if it really bothers you that much.
But as it's a useful and helpful function for what the platform is for, there's no technical support for turning it off by person.

@Laura Short Finneran A lot of people enjoy the badges but to each their own! I will turn off your badge notifications, which is what I recommend for people who aren't interested or are actively annoyed by the feature.
You can adjust that in your notifications settings anytime. It's under Manage Settings > Notifications > Settings.

Hi @Monique vdB I recently got an email that I'm at level 6. It sounds very encouraging, but not sure what are these levels represent nor what's included in lvl 6? I have 2 more levels to reach, could you share what lvl 7 & 8 have in stock.
It is fun earning badges ... yet .. I wish if they have some kind of mini courses on Jira .. and the badges are earned by completing them ... not just for making the community alive ...
