🚚 Beep beep - The forums platform is moving!

Hello, community!

Within the next few weeks, our forums will be migrating to a new platform, currently planned to go live on September 22. Here are some other Q&As about the change:

Why are we migrating?

We have been dealing with degraded security and performance on the forums, which is hosted by a third-party platform vendor. We are migrating to a more modern, performant, and extensible platform.

Will there be downtime?

Yes! Our forum in its current form is almost a decade old, and in order to migrate 10+ years' worth of content, we anticipate at least 10 days of the forums being in read-only mode, starting September 11. We’ll keep you posted with announcement banners and Statuspage updates.

We’ll also be looking for each other on social media with the hashtag #NewForumSameAtlassian.

This seems sudden - why?

Unfortunately, we are working against a hard deadline due to our contract renewal dates and technical issues with our soon-to-be-former platform vendor. Despite the tight timeline, we are working to get some Champions in to check out the new platform and give us their initial feedback, so we can hit the ground running after the migration.

What is going to change?

We will be posting a UX guide about the new platform at launch to go over the major changes. Although you will see improvements (for example, an editor that makes it easy to embed videos! The ability to subscribe to tags!) there are also some areas with feature gaps. We will work as hard as we can to gather your feedback and ship ongoing improvements as quickly as possible.

What are the biggest known gaps?

  1. Giving Kudos from the author card or the hovercard pop-up
  2. The ability to subscribe to search alerts
  3. Entitlements automatically populating when users ask a question

We’ll be listening thoughtfully to your feedback as well as feedback from our Champions so we know what to tackle first. Fortunately, the new platform will allow us to innovate and add features more quickly – so please let us know how we can make your forums experience better.

What about my badges?

Our series badges are being discontinued, although you will keep your highest series badge (for example, 100 Likes Received or 10 Accepted Solutions) as a memento of your achievements. You’ll see those badges awarded within the month after migration, along with some Kudos points to give your reputation a bump.

Will Kudos be changing?

We’re taking this opportunity to make some additional improvements to the Kudos program. You’ll also see a refreshed Kudos dashboard, revamped levels, new challenges, and a lot more – keep an eye on the Community Contests & Kudos group for a dedicated FAQ soon.

How will you gather our feedback?

Our quarterly satisfaction survey is also being improved, and you will get your first chance to take that survey a month or so after the launch. In the meantime, the new Forums Ideas & Feature Requests space (coming soon!) will let you vote on ideas submitted by our Community Champions and Community Management team. And finally – the comments here are open! We are eager to hear from you.

Any other questions?

Please leave them below (or if you’re seeing this during read only mode or just have a confidential question about the migration, email us at communitymanagers[at]atlassian.com) and we’ll be happy to answer them! In the meantime, Keep Calm and Party On. 💙

Is that why the Automation usage changes are being announced on the 10th? 😂

But seriously, excited for the new home!

For those of you with Forum-withdrawls you are always welcome to my forum while the rebuilding is done :)

There are also some amazing Discords, so do not fear the silence of the void; there are voices that will carry you through it until we return to the new, glorious forum!

@Kris Klima _K15t_ I honestly don’t know what I’m supposed to do with myself for 10 days. Will be lost in time and space, probably. 😂

Considering I’m usually still hanging around the Community while on vacation, this might be the first one that actually feels like a real vacation. 😅🏖️

I am excited to see a new platform. It really stands out, that the current one has become aged :-)

I am nosy about one of the topics you mentioned:

Why is there so much focus on badges and kudos? I thought this was just a thing you weren't able to turn off and subsequently ran with it.

Is that something that is important to people?

Happy to here your takes on this.

Another question: Isn't there any Atlassian technology that can cover this use case? I mean for example using Jira (with some optical changes to emphasize comments) would have done the job, wouldn't it?

@Robert Wen_Cprime_  - don’t think I didn’t suggest that one!  #NewForumWhoDis

@Haddon Fisher  - haha no coordination there, I promise! Our dates are purely based on contract expiration date and engineering constraints.

@Becker_ Rene - love your questions, thank you!

1) Focus on badges and Kudos is for people who are interested and who have earned a lot of the badges on Khoros over the years - we do get a lot of questions about this! But our dev team is focused on the core forums experience and the migration, it’s the community management team taking the opportunity to refresh kudos, so not taking away from the core work.

2)  Forums software is way more complex than it looks - the most obvious issue being spam management.  Fun fact is this forum started out (many years ago) built on top of Confluence, but it was overrun by spam.

Likewise, Jira is intended as an internal tool - so we’d have to build an entire spam management integration that the product was simply not designed for. It also needs incredibly granular permissioning and an entire moderation back end for similar reasons.

Candidly, we did consider a homegrown platform but it would not be fast enough to build (the current platform we’re on is a potential security risk among other things; we really do need to move as quickly as possible) nor did our engineers want to invest in that vs. improving our own products. The platform we're moving to is more extensible and gives us more opportunity to build for the long-term.

@Monique vdB - It's just the Forum section that's moving, yes? Learning, Events, etc. are staying as is?

Interested to see what the new forums will look like.

I can't seem to find the recommended Forums Ideas & Feature Requests space, but if you're looking for suggestions, maybe the forum's search functionality can be integrated in some way with Atlassian's Bugs/Suggestions issue tracker? Not a small request I know, but imagine being able to find the bug/suggestion ticket when trying to search the forums for a solution to your problem.....

@Kate  sorry for the confusion, I will reword the post - the Forums Ideas & Feature Requests space will be on the new platform, we will have a new content type (Ideas) that Champions can create and users can vote on!
