How do I automatically update the score on one ticket that is linked to another ticket?

Hi, I'm looking to create an automation that automatically aggregates quantitative scores based on the tickets that are linked to it.

For example:

  • ticket 1 has a custom field called "Aggregate Score"
  • ticket 2 and ticket 3 are linked via the "is caused by" link to ticket 1
  • ticket 2 and ticket 3 have a custom field called "Score" with scores of 25 and 50 respectively
  • ticket 1 should now update automatically with an "Aggregate Score" of 75

The automation should only work based on tickets that are linked by the "is caused by" link. How do I do this?

Hi @Frank

What have you tried thus far to solve this need?

If you have a rule that is not working as expected, please note context is important for the community to help.  Please post the following:

  • what version of Jira are you using: Cloud, Server, or Data Center
  • if using Cloud, what type of project is this: company-managed, team-managed, JPD, etc.
  • an image of your complete automation rule in a single image for continuity
  • images of any relevant actions / conditions / branches
  • an image of the audit log details showing the rule execution
  • explain what is not working as expected and why you believe that to be the case.

If you have not started a rule yet, I encourage you to try to do so.  Successfully using automation rules requires learning and experimentation.

To get you started, your rule could be triggered on changes to the fields, and use conditional tests and the Lookup Issues action to gather the correct issues to sum the fields, finally updating the correct one.

Please also note: that is just the simplest case.  Also consider other cases which could impact the results:

  • creating a new issue which is linked to the others
  • adding a link to an existing issue
  • removing a link to already linked issues
  • deleting an issue linked to others
  • manual tampering, where someone changes the calculated field
  • etc.

Kind regards,
Bill
