Automatic rule on adding a flag only with comment

Hi, All

How to set up an automation rule in Jira to ensure that an issue can only have the "Impediment" flag added if a comment explaining the reason is provided.

Restrict adding a flag without comment

Hi @Uliana Komiakovych -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Automation rules run after some event has happened.  They cannot prevent something from happening.

And...it is not possible to require the comment when flagging an issue / work item.  Here is the suggestion to add that feature, which you may watch / vote for to see progress: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-91131

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Thank you. It did not resolve my question; however, I've found a workaround.

Hello Uliana,

Would you mind providing the workaround.  I have the same situation.

Kind Regards,
Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Here are a few workarounds I found:

  1. Flagging with a comment via the backlog
Adding a flag with a comment as part of the same action is only possible from the backlog. When you flag an issue from the backlog, the comment pop-up opens automatically.
  2. If you want to require a comment whenever an issue is flagged, you can enforce this through workflow validation.
"Flagged" usually indicates the issue is blocked or needs attention, so tying it to a dedicated status works well. For example, when transitioning an issue to Blocked status, Jira requires a comment explaining the change. Without entering a comment (the system prompts via a pop-up), the transition cannot be completed.

Thank you,
Uliana
