Switching back to Data Center from Cloud

Hi everyone,

We are debating whether to migrate from Jira on-prem to Jira Cloud. Our management is convinced that Cloud offers better scalability, security, and compliance. However, I have some concerns about losing control over data residency, customization limitations, and potential issues with performance at scale.

Before making a decision, I’d love to hear from any users or companies that migrated from Jira Cloud back to on-prem (or Data Center). Specifically:

• What were the reasons behind your decision to switch back?
• Did you face challenges with performance, costs, customization, or regulatory compliance on Cloud?
• How did the transition back to on-prem work, and were there any lessons learned?

• What were the reasons behind your decision to switch back?

I assisted with a few similar migrations. The primary reasons were the acquisition of a smaller team using a cloud platform by a larger team operating in  a data center

• How did the transition back to on-prem work, and were there any lessons learned?

There were blockers, including team-managed projects, issues with importing the XML backup exported from the cloud to the server, and challenges with mapping user names and group names. But we have solved all these within an intermediate technical instance trough manipulations with XML-code and the database
