If you run projects in Jira, you already know how much depends on how long issues sit in a given status. The problem is getting to that number. It usually means leaving the issue, opening a report, and coming back.
Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira Custom Fields remove that trip. Timepiece calculates the time issues spend in the statuses you choose, calculates the result to a Jira custom field, and the value shows up on your work items, in your Jira searches, and in your Timepiece reports.
The field is defined by one setting: Statuses to Track. Pick any combination of workflow statuses and the field returns the total duration across them. That covers Lead Time, Resolution Time, Time in Triage, Time in QA, or whatever your process actually calls it. There is no separate metric type to learn.
You see it while you work: The calculated duration appears on the issue view screen. No tabs, no second window, no context switch to answer a question about the ticket already in front of you.
JQL works properly, including units: Because these are standard Jira custom fields, they show up in the JQL editor with duration-based unit suggestions. A field set to display in days can still be searched in hours or minutes. Your display format and your query format stay independent.
They work as search columns: Add the field to your column layout, and durations sit side by side across every issue in the result set, sortable like any other column.
Add it as a column and see everything at once. Open column settings in your Jira search results, add your Timepiece field, and every issue in the list shows its duration. Sort by it and the slow ones rise to the top. Handy for stand-ups when you need to know what is stuck.
One field, different rules per team. A single Timepiece field can hold multiple contexts, so support and development can track different statuses on different calendars without you creating two fields.
Getting this set up is straightforward. You create the field from the Jira Admin screens, and you can use it across both Team-Managed and Company-Managed projects. Here are the steps to deploy:
Navigate to Fields: Go to the Fields admin page in your Jira instance and choose to create a new custom field.
Select the Type: Choose the "Timepiece - Time in Status Custom Field Type" from the available options.
Add to Screens: Associate the new field with a configuration scheme and add it to the relevant screens so it becomes visible on your desired work items.
Manage Your Field: Once created, it automatically appears on the Timepiece Custom Fields admin page. From there, you are in total control to customize background update intervals to perfectly balance data freshness with instance performance.
Timepiece Custom Fields are available now. If you want to stop switching tabs and bring your metrics back to the issue level, visit Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira’s Atlassian Marketplace listing.
