Throwback Thursday: What is the coldest temperature you remember? #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
It is still winter where I am now living and it has been dang cold lately. Plus windy! I remember being in Sidney, Nebraska at the beginning of January 1993. I went outside for a little walk and it was -4F. It was so darn cold that the snot in my nose froze! That is the coldest temperature I remember being outside in. The coldest it has been in Sidney, NE is -33F back in January of 1930.

So, what is the coldest temperature you remember being outside in or experiencing?
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

The coldest temperature I ever experienced was -14°C in Belgium, so not that extreme at all.

Been in -30F.  Not fun.  Even the car creaks in the morning cause it doesn't want to move.  Even more fun, try to change a tire when it's 20 below zero F.

Gotta make sure you have enough fuel for the furnace, don't want to run out when it's that bad.

Come on up to Minnesota.  In 1996, northern MN hit -60F in Tower, MN.

Hi @Kristján Geir Mathiesen , what a great discussion topic! Thanks for this question.

I grew up in the Midwest in central Illinois and I can remember having some cold winters! One Winter, McDonald's decided to have a promotion, sort of a buy one, get one free, on quarter pounders only you could buy one burger and get the second one for the price of the temperature that it was at noon the previous day! There were a few days when it was actually still negative F at noon, which my mom thought meant that they should give you some money back off the first quarter pounder...

I just checked and the lowest recorded temperature in Illinois did take place while I was still living there, when I was in high school, which was -36F. That is more than cold enough for me!

Thanks for this topic and have a nice Thursday everyone!

Hi @Kristján Geir Mathiesen 😃!

The coldest temperature wasn't so freezing compared with others, lol.

I once faced in the Rio Grande do Sul mountain region -3ºC, and when I woke up at 5:00 am, the field was all like this. 😁🥶😅

Happy Thursday, Everyone! 🙏🏽☀️😃

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen does adding wind chill count? If so, about -45°C otherwise it would have been -39°C.  I'm not in the coldest part of Canada by any means but it's days like that where you really hope your furnace is working properly.

This time, in Toronto, sun set hours ago, end of Jan/beginning of Feb, heading north away from the lake, wind whipping from the south toward the lake, eyes tearing from the cold stinging of the wind, tear rolling down the cheek, freezes on my walk to the hotel (5-6 blocks).

-14C that night if memory serves me.

Ran a contract for the Alberta Motor Association about 10 years back.  It hit -50C a few times while there.  Everything is different even sounds are different.
I think the worst I've seen though is Ice Fog when it warmed up a bit.

Today, the temperatures in Berlin are quite warm compared to what I experienced in my childhood. I don't particularly remember the temperature but I do remember more snow and much colder days.

Looking at historic weather data for Berlin, the lowest recorded temperature was -26.0°C / -14,8°F.

According to ChatGPT (I had troubles googling for it actually :D), the coldest day in Berlin in my childhood, was -24.6°C / -12.28°F. So I experienced one of the worst days in Berlin history. I was 8 years old so that must mean school was probably closed that day because of the cold and I stayed home in my cozy room and played PlayStation or worked on my PC.

The temperature on the same day this year was at around 7-10°C / 44.6-50°F. What a huge difference!

Can't function in extreme cold weather. I would avoid it if I can. :)

The coldest is probably 5 F that I've been in.

I'm in SE Wisconsin. It typically only falls below 0°F a few times a winter now, but with the windchill it can dip below -20°F or so occasionally. A few years ago, I was in San Diego for a work conference and it was about 55°F. Meanwhile, back at home, schools were closed as wind chills hit -50°F. It was pretty fun video calling my students when they were back in school and we got a chance to chat about how it felt like 100° difference between where we were. 😊

Wow! Thanks guys for sharing. So fun and interesting to read. That wind sure makes a huge difference, when it is taken into consideration.

We were -10 here last week. I've never had to plug my truck in before (its a diesel). The one day I decided to go the office that week and it was so cold the fuel had gelled up overnight. :(

Ha! I actually needed to google this 🤣

The coldest winter in Czechia was in 2006 when I was still living in Karvina near Ostrava 👇

"The coldest day in these 73 years was reported by the Ostrava weather station. Here the temperature dropped to -27.0 °C in January 2006"

Yes, winters are pretty cold in Czechia @Tuncay Senturk . That's why I needed to get out of there 😆

Back when I was in my hometown, 10 or so years ago I think it was around -20°C for a few days. Quite cold, but I don't think I can distinguish much difference once the temperature gets under 0°C 😅

The coldest I have ever been in is during the February 1987 nor'easter in the US that impacted the Mid-Atlantic States. During this time I lived at Andrew Air Force Base and I remember one day the temperature was -16. I, of course was not used to this since I am from Arizona and this storm was one of the reasons I stay living in sunny Arizona!

I remember some years ago, like 10 or so, that we had below -21°C where I lived close to Munich, and that should be the coldest temperature I clearly remember. And I'm happy I wasn't exposed to colder temperatures yet (or freezing wind to make it even worse).
