BYOK Encryption is coming soon to a Cloud instance near you

Hi all,

*Update: The early access program (EAP) for Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) encryption has officially started. Please refer to the EAP documentation for more details. If you are interested in participating in the EAP, please reach out to your account representative or comment down below.

I’m excited to share that the early access program (EAP) for bring your own key (BYOK) encryption is almost here! We’re adding the finishing touches on the feature before we get ready to kick off the EAP in Q2 2023.

During EAP, you will be able to encrypt your Jira Issue data at rest using encryption keys generated and hosted in your Amazon Web Services (AWS) account via the AWS Key Management Service (KMS). While BYOK may not be for everyone, for customers with stringent security requirements, BYOK encryption will enable you to:

  • Add another layer of protection for sensitive data

  • Increase the control you have over your sensitive data by revoking access to encryption keys without vendor reliance

  • Monitor logs of access to your encryption keys hosted AWS CloudTrail.

The EAP is an invite-only program for enterprise customers that are on the Cloud Enterprise plan or a Cloud Enterprise trial. Please reach out to your account representative if you are interested in participating in the EAP. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a place for all customers who express interest in the EAP.

Follow along on our roadmap to get the latest details on our plans for general availability of BYOK and making BYOK available on Confluence later in 2023. In the meantime, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to comment below.

Cheers,

Bhavya

@Bhavya Nag Great news and happy to see where Atlassian is headed to.

Will BYOK be extended to Premium and Standard plans of JS, JSM and Confluence? This would benefit smaller teams and organizations who are still strict in their security measures.

@Kalin U - At this time, we do not have plans to extend BYOK to Standard and Premium plans. We appreciate the feedback though, and will keep it in mind as we consider pricing/packaging changes when BYOK becomes generally available.

@Bhavya Nag : What's the deal NOT offering BYOK for standard plans? We are a SME with more than 200 customers across different businesses. We still have the servers on prem and we have a lot of customer related documentations in our Confluence. By contract, we CANNOT move to cloud as long we don't get this feature. We are TO SMALL and can't afford enterprise plans. Is there any other solutions available to achieve this extra level of security?

@Martin Vogt - Thanks for the comment. We take the feedback seriously and are working hard to ensure that there’s a path for all customers to move to Atlassian Cloud. At the same time, we try to make pricing and packaging decisions for the long term. While we expect that BYOK encryption will continue to be a value-added feature, we do plan to offer our Enterprise plan at lower user tiers in the future - you can watch this ticket for updates.

@Bhavya Nag Thanks for letting me know. Maybe it would be an option to offer BYOK separately? Security is no matter of company size. It‘s particularly even more likely, that smaller customers will use this festure because they cannot afford a data center license.

Hi all,

Is the BYOK now available on Jira software Premium or Standard plans ?

I see on the Cloud Roadmap [here|https://www.atlassian.com/wac/roadmap/cloud?search=byok] that "BYOK encryption - Jira Software GA" has been released in Q4 2023. Is it what it refers to ?

Thanks

@Maud_Maring At the moment, "BYOK encryption - Jira Software GA" will remain to be a part of the Enterprise plan. Please follow this ticket and, even better, comment on the ticket with your needs for enabling the capability for the Premium and Standard plans. Thank you!
