Links in Trello automatically converted to plain text

Martin June 21, 2024

I am using the free Trello app on android.

When I edit a card, the links on the card automatically switch from links to plain text. In some cases I have 60+ links on the card which are now all lost.

Is this a bug? Is there a way of restoring the links, restoring an earlier version of the card. Is there a way of stopping this bug from occurring?

Thank you community

I am also experiencing this issue in Trello for Android. I've had a few cards affected in various ways; I have lost a lot of valuable links now and I'm seriously considering looking for a different platform, which is a pity since Trello has been quite useful to me... until now.

So far, though, I have found only one way to reliably replicate the bug:

  • Open the card with links
  • Click on the card description; links shows up in "markdown" (eg. [link name](url))
  • Click on the red X (ie. cancel any edits you have made)
    • The card still shows the links correctly in the card description
  • Click on the card description again; this time, the links now show up as plaintext
  • If you make any edits and save, you end up losing all the links in the card.
    • I used to be able to edit card descriptions quickly, discarding any irrelevant changes, with no worries about losing data.
    • Now, I have to consciously double- and triple-check my cards before saving. Instead of saving time, I am now wasting it checking whether or not the app is misbehaving. As a tool, the Trello app has become a lot less helpful and has turned into a liability for me.

PS. This also happens for boldfaced text, italicized text and code (text enclosed in backticks). It seems like the bug removes all formatting (which is inconvenient but recoverable) AND all link data (which is seriously disruptive and irreversible)

Welcome to the community @Martin

Did you try clicking the pencil icon on the card on desktop app and then clicking the "Convert to link card" button?

Hi. Thank you for your response however I am finding it hard to understand how it answers my query.

It may help to give one specific example out of the 60 lost links.

  1. I added a link to another card about two months ago.
  2. This link then worked successfully for two months.
  3. When I went into the card (to link a separate card) the link was broken and the name of the other card remained but without the link.

This happen to all 60 existing links, leaving just the one link to the new card. This is shown in the image I have attached. I had started collecting links on the card since August 2022 and don't understand why, one day, I lost all these links I had collected for a number of years.

I am trying to understand:

  1. Why this might happen
  2. How I can easily restore the original links
  3. Prevent it happening again.

Many thanks for your help.

It just don't it again. Added one link and lost 12 pre-existing links.

Trello is going to be unusable for me if it automatically removes existing links.Screenshot_20240623-072425.png
