We have a premium subscription to Trello, but recently we received a notification stating that there are too many open cards, and to add new ones, we need to archive some of the existing ones. However, the premium plan doesn’t mention any limits on the number of cards.image.png

There are a limit, but it is not a fixed count but more the total size of all cards combined.

The limit is there more for performance reasons (properly why they do not mention it in pricing) than to set limit and you would get a much better experience if you arechived some cards, or moved some of them to a secondary Archive board

To add to this, often times, if you are hitting the card limit, you may be using Trello in a way it is not designed for, like database-style functionality. If you are using Trello like you would use a database in a web application, just know that the program isn't really designed for this. It's really for task/project management and note-taking. Usually, users who use Trello for the things it is designed for don't come close to the limits Atlassian imposes, and they mention in their support articles some examples of use cases Trello is not designed for.

Ultimately, like anything else, Trello's resources are not unlimited, so there is some point where somebody can overwhelm the system. These limits are only there to keep Trello running smoothly, as @Rasmus Wulff Jensen mentioned.

Hitting the limits is not directly did the same as wrong usage... It can simply mean that there a lot of work done... But most of the time cards also gets done/or is at least not relevant anymore... It is in such a situation you archive it (or move it to an archive board)

As an example, we put all cards that we are done with in a list called Done <month> <year> (example Done - January 2025) and move these lists to a yearly archive board... That way all done work are on a year board with 12 lists (one for each month) that we can refer back to should the need arise, while the main board stay quick it only upcoming and in progress cards

@Rasmus Wulff Jensen

Correct, that's what I meant by using the words "often times" and "you may be" and "if".

I think the cart is before the horse, here.

The intention was never to imply:

hitting the limits means-> incorrect usage in this manner.

The intention was to imply:

incorrect usage in this manner means-> you will hit the limits.

@Tatiana Covaliuc to be clear, I'm not saying you are using Trello wrong. I'm not saying you are using it like a database. I'm just letting you know that if you were, this tool is not really designed for it.

And I only say this because some users genuinely don't know this, and it can be helpful information to anyone who reaches card limits and stumbles onto a thread about it, or to OP if it did happen to apply to them. I've seen users confused about card limits caused by incorrect usage before. Anecdotally, this is common.

I hope this clears my intentions up! Sorry for any confusion.
