How to automate a template

Natasha Bertolozzi August 14, 2023

I created the card templates on a board. I want to automate those.

for example:

when I add a card to a specific list I want the card template specified to automatically apply to all cards added to that list.

I am not seeing an option for this.

can someone help?

Hi @Natasha Bertolozzi

Welcome to the community.

Here is a useful article about how card templates for Trello work:

https://blog.trello.com/trello-card-templates

As a summary, a card template is designed for you to be able to quickly copy it as a new card.

What you're asking for can be done with automation.  If you are new to automation, I recommend looking at this article:

https://trello.com/guide/automate-anything

What parts of the template card are you looking to copy to the new card?  Is it the card description, checklists, labels or all of those things?

Hello thank you for responding.

Ive read both of those articles and they do not address my need/question.

I would like the entire template card to be copied every time a card is added to a specific list - custom fields, checklists, description. Everything.

Is there a way to have that occur? The template is not an option for any of the actions in the rules/automation section. The only way I believe you can create a template is by manually clicking on the button (as the first article states).

is automation not yet set up for template cards?

Hi Natasha, I'm trying to do the same thing, did you figure it out? Thank You! Matt
