How to assign a board as a personal board?

Deleted user Nov 02, 2020

There is no option for me to assign a new board to personal boards rather than the default team. How can I fix this?

It seems that Trello isn't working as it was before.

I made some research, and now, new members have a team by default, automatically created when they join. Then, when they create a board, trello put it in this default team. We, as older members, don't have this default team, but we got invited in a team or created a team with other people in it.

So, the solution for now is to create a team with only you inside it, and then create a board with this team.

You can delete the team after this, the board will go into your personal boards. But if you want to invite someone, you will need your board to have a team. If you already invited people on your board and delete the team, they will stay on your board.

You'll face this problem again if you delete your team and want to create "personal" boards. So just keep your team until you reach the limit of 10 boards, then delete it, re-create it and start 10 boards again (with the 10 old ones now in your personal boards).

---

Trello was fine the way it was, making teams is good, but forcing teams on every single board isn't going to make things clear and will just make Trello more exhausting to use and comprehend.

Thanks Cottens, this seems to be the best way to do it.

I indeed agree that this is an obvious design flaw and makes it less interesting and user-friendly.

This isn’t going to work for long as a workaround. All boards will be in a team/workspace.

You can still set the board to be private but the board will need to be in a team.

Essentially teams will be renamed workspaces.
All boards will be in workspaces.  Everyone will have at least one workspace.
A board just for you will be a private board (in the workspace).

Thanks for your reply. "Workspace" seems like a more appropriated word, and I hope the final result will be easily usable and understandable.

Me too :)

Is there an update to this? I'm having similar thoughts as the above.

I'm also the admin of my team, and I don't like the way my home page and board spaces are organized with a "Private" board under the team -

I use trello for myself, as part of work (via profiles) and with my personal team - I need to be able to visually separate out a personal board from both "work" and "team".

It's not a private board within the team, it's MY board.
I've read the solutions above, but agree they are all workarounds.

The best part of Trello is that it's visual, and breaking the logic of one of the basic views is frustrating.

How do we request a change ? (ETA: In reading the "suggested answer" I see that a solution is forthcoming - so my next question is - is there a timeline?)

Oh! And I just created a Team called "Personal Boards" with only me as a member -
So now I can add that it would be great if the boards were click-draggable on the Boards view and we could move entire boards from team-to-team. :)

(Instead it looks like I may have to copy all of the boards one by one - meh)

I'm not going to execute on that yet, hoping for more elegant options.

The team/workspace named “Personal Boards” was what I was going to suggest.

Hi Michael,

does that mean free users are now only going to be able to create a maximum of 10 boards regardless of what workarounds we use now?

...and then prompted to upgrade?

thanks,
Grant

Yes, unless you make another team/workspace.

@Cottens

you can create another team that you will be an administrator and create a new board in that new team where only 1 team member will exist that's you.

Thanks, it works but seems more like a work around.

If you are a free user then delete the team that you have created! after that you will able to create a personal board.

I can't do this, I'm not the team administrator. And no, I won't leave this team. I want to be able to create personal boards like I was before, even if I'm part of a team.

@Jean-Christophe

Can you provide a screenshot what was showing when you click create a board?

Actually a lot of changes have been there in last few month but in my account i can see any new changes like that so it's better that you provide a screenshot!

Sorry for the French everywhere :p

REPOL is my team's name. As you can see in the second picture, there is no other choice when trying to change teams, and there is just no choice option when creating the board as shown in the first screenshot (REPOL being only text and cannot be selected or changed).

Hi @[deleted] & @Jean-Christophe ,

I think you guys are not using Trello's free plan.

You guys must be in business or enterprise plan and only administration has the access who can do what.

No. I am using the free plan, and I am also the administrator of the team linked to my account.

Hi @[deleted] ,

Welcome to the community!

While creating a board in the visibility choose private & team to no team!

https://help.trello.com/article/707-creating-a-new-board

Hi,

I have the same issue of not being able to assign a newly created board to "personnal" instead of it going in one of my teams. Even though I choose the "Private" setting, it is not possible to set the team parameter to "no team", because the option does not exist. At the moment, you can only choose within your teams in the scroll menu.

Exactly. The option to change back to the original "Personal" board is not there.

Hi,

Same here, can't create a board without it being automatically added to my default team.

Even if I set it to private, I can change the team on it once created but there is only one option available in the menu (the team I'm part of). I can't choose "no team", as said before, the option does not exist.

I even tried to copy a personal board but again, I can't choose "no team", as the option isn't available.

I'm using free plan, and I'm not the administrator of the team.

Looks like it's a bug, I can't create boards right now because of this (I don't want someone to access a board that should be personal).
