I am new to Trello and would like to know how to make the documents that are attached editable - i.e. any Word or Excel that is attached now becomes read-only and can't be updated or edited.
@Kate Hardin you can't edit an attachment in your browser, you have to download it and open it in the relevant document editor.
In order to edit in the browser, you should attach a link to the document for example in Google Docs or Office365's web editor, then it will open in a new tab and you can edit it there.
But there's no way to edit documents in place inside the Trello interface. NoteJoy allows you to type and edit notes directly in Trello's web interface using their Power Up ... I don't think any of the other big document storage providers have the same option in a power up.

@Kate Hardin Hi Kate! :) Is the document locked/read-only if you download it from the card it was attached to? Or are you not able to make any changes when viewing the document from within Trello? I tried attaching and downloading a .docx file from my own card to reproduce, but my word processor allowed me to edit after opening the downloaded file.
