Due date rule ist not working

Jessica Gray September 25, 2023

Hey there,

i am completely new to everything here. I have a  problem with the rule for the due date

I set an automation - also see attachment

  • the moment a card in list "To Do + kaufen" due in less than 7 days is due, copy the card to the top of list "Lagerverkauf / Aktionen" on board "M Akute Aufgaben", and add member (.....) to the card

But no cards are copied into the board i wanted it to. Is it because i just set it up today or did I make another mistake?

Update:

The rule actually worked on the day the card was due... but not before (less than 7 days)

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jessica, welcome to the Atlassian Community! I hope you're enjoying Trello.

The reason why the rule worked on the same day but not before is that the "due in less than 7 days" part is just a filter, but the rule is triggering the moment a card in the list "To Do + kaufen" is due.

We use the filter to specify details about the card so that it won't run the rule on cards you don't want to change. For example, if you want to run the rule only on cards assigned to you, you can use the filter "assigned to me". The filter used in the rule you mentioned wouldn't make a difference because at the moment a card is due, it will be already due in less than 7 days, this is why the automation just ignored it and ran the rule at the moment it was due.

I think that the trigger you're looking for is this one:2023-09-26_22-11-39.png

Please note that if a card is already due in less than 7 days, the rule will not work. If you have cards due in less than 7 days and want to move them to a different list, you can consider creating a board button to move all of them at once. Here's an example:

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help.

Hi Corolina,

thank you for getting back to me.

I used exactly the filter you suggested but still the cards aren´t moved.... I used an "extra" filter for a specific list:

7 days before a card in list "To Do + kaufen" is due, copy the card to the top of list "Lagerverkauf / Aktionen" on board "M Akute Aufgaben",

As far as I understand your explaination the trigger will ONLY work if the due date  is exactly 7 days away... everything else inbetween won´t trigger it right?

The button for the board is a good idea but we would like to have it automatically taken place because it is an extra thing to do and which someone has to think about acutally doing if you know what i mean.

Thank you for your help.

I just tried to create the board button you suggested...

I will work for us with this:

move each card in list "To Do + kaufen" due in less than 7 days to list "Lagerverkauf / Aktionen" on board "M Akute Aufgaben"

It is possible to add the action - link cards together?

So we know from which board it is coming.

Thanks again

Hi Jessica,

If the automation isn't triggered 7 days before a card is due, please create a ticket with us informing the card URL, date, and time that the automation should have run so we can investigate further. You can find our contact form here: https://trello.com/contact

I know the button would be a manual action, and it's not what you desire, but it will only be used once for the existing cards with due dates less than 7 days. The rule will run at some point for the ones with more than 7 days.

If you're worried about new cards that are created on the board with a due date less than 7 days, you can also create a rule like this one:

when a due date less than 7 days from now is set on a card in list "To Do + kaufen", copy the card to the top of list "Lagerverkauf / Aktionen" on board "M Akute Aufgaben"

For cards that are copied into the board with a due date, a rule like this one should work:

when a card due in less than 7 days is added to list "To Do + kaufen", copy the card to the top of list "Lagerverkauf / Aktionen" on board "M Akute Aufgaben"

You'll have a lot of work at the beginning because you need to create rules to cover all the possibilities, but after that, the automations should run smoothly, and you'll save time on repetitive actions.

As for your second question, I'm afraid we don't have the option to link the cards together while using board buttons. I'll pass your interest in this on to our team for analysis/consideration—let me know if there's any additional info you'd like me to send them. Thanks for sharing your suggestion.

In case you want to use this option for a rule instead of a button, please note that it will only work when two cards are mentioned. For example, if you use "copy" instead of "move", two cards will be involved: the original one and the copied one. If you use move, there wouldn't be a second card to link.

Let me know if you have any questions.
